Frequently Asked Questions

Can I have wax removal on the NHS?

In the past the NHS have provided Ear Syringing/Irrigation but during the Covid-19 epidemic these services were put on hold. Depending on your location most GP's are no longer providing wax removal services or have extremely long waiting lists.

How long does wax removal take?

This really depends on the amount, location and type of wax you have. I allow 45 minutes per appointment, but it may not take this long. If I can't remove the wax at the first appointment the second wax removal appointment will be free of charge.

What is the difference between a hearing screen and a hearing test?

A hearing screen is an automated test that checks your hearing at 4 frequencies. A hearing screen can tell me if a hearing loss is present but not the type of hearing loss you may have.

A hearing test (Pure tone Audiometry) is used to measure the sensitivity of our hearing across 8 frequencies and tests air conduction and bone conduction. I will use calibrated equipment to objectively assess your hearing and explain any potential hearing conditions.

Will wax removal improve my hearing?

Possibly, yes, there are a few factors to consider though.

  • If you have no underlying hearing loss and an ear that is fully blocked with ear wax, when it is removed you should notice an improvement in your hearing.

  • If you have a partial wax occlusion and sound can still reach the eardrum wax removal may not make any difference.

  • If you are still having problems hearing after wax removal, we would recommend having a hearing assessment.

What if there is no wax in my ears when you see me?

If I find that wax is not the problem or that your ears are clear a consultation fee of £30 is payable. If there is another issue, for example, an ear infection, I will provide a report for your GP, the fee for this is £30.

My relative has dementia, can you still help them?

Yes, definitely! Through MY work in the NHS, I have been seeing people with dementia, in their own home, for ear care for over 8 years. I are more than happy to discuss the care and support needed to provide the best experience from my service.

Why should I see you and not someone else?

I have worked as an NHS Audiologist for over 19 years. Throughout my career I have undertaken various roles as a Hearing Therapist and Senior Audiologist. I am professional, approachable and have extensive knowledge of ear and hearing health.
